WIAW: Alphabet Edition (ABC’s of Food)

  Feb 3, 2016  |  #Eats

Good morning WIAWers and fellow BLT readers. How is it already Wednesday? This week is FLYING by. Head over to Arman’s to see more!

After last week’s more serious tone, for this What I Ate Wednesday, I thought I’d do something a little different and FUN for today’s showcase of eats. On Monday, I set out to see how many different “lettered” foods I could incorporate in a day. Note: To do this, I did consciously plan some of my meals, but I didn’t go get any groceries to complete the challenge. Hence, this was a day of eats using what I had on hand!

Breakfast: Coffee with Milk (x2). How great is this Steve Jobs’ quote on the cup?! I am LOVING some french press right now.

Oatmeal with Blueberries, Banana, Flax seeds, Chia seeds, Jelly, Goji Berries, Yogurt and Peanut Butter.

Lunch:

Kale + Spinach salad base, massaged with Olive Oil and Lemon Juice, and topped with Quinoa, Nutritional Yeast, Hemp Seeds, Hummus, Eggs, Carrots, Tahini, Sunflower Seeds, Goat cheese, and Apples with (Balsamic) Vinegar for dressing. And a side of Ice water.

I don’t even know how to describe this combo of flavors. I washed that down with some Kombucha. I thought I would love this flavor (mojito lover over here), but I actually like the strawberry acai coconut flavor from Kevita better.

Afternoon Snack: 2% Yogurt (I added cocoa powder to it) and a Rice Cake with crunchy PB and a Date (had to include a “D” food somewhere!). Note: the higher fat you get in your yogurt, the better-tasting and creamier it is. I’ve found that I can eat plain yogurt straight up like this because it’s so filling and flavorful, but with the skim/no-fat ones, I always need to add peanut butter or some crunch.

Dinner:

Whole Wheat Pasta, topped with Zuccini, Brussel Sprouts, Cauliflower, Broccoli and Parm Cheese.

Dessert:

I had some of CCK’s Cookie Dough. This stuff is like crack. I eat it in a more voluminous way than peanut butter, that’s for sure. I also made Davida’s strawberry cheesecake balls, except I used goji berries 🙂 They are DELICIOUS. You should make them now.

Isn’t it gloriussss that healthy foods have such variety in their names, with different letters? This was actually a fun self-challenge to see how many different things I eat in a day – next time, maybe I’ll try it with colors.

As long as I counted right, I had 25 of the 26 alphabet letters included. I fell short on “U.” I actually struggled with “F” before realizing I had flax seeds.  I counted “I” for ice, because I didn’t have any ice cream on hand, and I couldn’t think of any other “I” foods! Do you have any usual suspects for those letters?

How many letters do you think you could reach in the alphabet?

Tell me the best thing you ate this week.

  1. You are seriously the toppings queen. I am so impressed by your oatmeal and salad! So much variety of flavors and textures.
The alphabet idea is genius. Maybe next time have yams and ummm…. umami broth at Panera? Haha, just kidding, I’m so impressed you were able to get 24/26!
As far as best food eaten by me.. I just had a bagel and that was pretty awesome.
    Have a good day!!

  2. This is so fun! My god your salad almost got the whole alphabet down on its own. I was about to say Yams and Umami but clever Kate has beat me.
But hey you did get nutritional Yeast – that’s a Y? (haha I think its a typo but you actually didn’t put a Y – weird omen!?) Oh and your yogurt! Girl you did better than you think
    Unagi? You need some eel.

    1. As I was writing everything down in the salad, I basically thought I was reciting the whole alphabet. You are right about nutritional yeast – I was considering it a “N” but it’s totally “Y” worthy. I updated it πŸ™‚

  3. Wow, this makes eating really fun. That is so cool! πŸ™‚ ‘U’ would be a hard letter. I’m trying to think … ‘Umeboshi?’ That’s a Japanese pickled plum. πŸ˜€

  4. That oatmeal looks absolutely delicious. Same with your dinner! Best thing I have eaten so far this week is probably Wild Friends gingerbread peanut butter πŸ™‚ Sooooo good.

  5. Have you ever tasted 3-6% yogurt? The best thing in the world, I can not eat low fat yogurt after discovering how amazing yogurt could actually taste. The letters got you eating some serious variety, just like you said, that is so awesome! I am very intrigued by those desserts you had after supper, I love anything that is healthy yet stomps sugar cravings!

  6. Your eats look incredibly delicious! I had a really good salad with grilled shrimp at a new to me restaurant last week. I also tried sunflower seed butter and I am LOVING it!

  7. Such a fun idea and motivation to get just a bit more variety in your day πŸ™‚ Ohhh man that bean cookie dough – SOOOOO good eh?! One of my favourite recipes ever πŸ™‚ And as if those strawberry cheesecake balls have nutritional yeast. That’s awesome!

  8. What a nutritious day of eats! I’m missing salads so much right now – but it’s just still too dang cold for me to enjoy them. I just stare at them on everyone else’s blogs πŸ˜‰

    1. I think I just gravitate towards a salad because making them is a habit, no matter the time of year. But I can see how in colder weather, it would be easy to go towards soup or a “warm” salad of roasted veggies and grains.

  9. That bowl of oatmeal. YUM.

Also, what a fun eating “challenge”. I tend to be a little short on variety in my diet sometimes, when I find foods that I’m feeling I tend to get myself into a rut until I am sick of those foods & then start over. I should try this soon!

  10. Oh my gosh!! These all look so delicious! I love all the letters and variety in your diet. And that quote! Oh my gosh… as soon as I read it I literally took out my agenda and wrote it down! SO inspiring! Thanks! Also, I’m gonna go checkout those desserts! SWOON! They look delicious!!
