I feel all over the place right now. It’s difficult to feel organized after being gone for the majority of the week, and I feel like I have a million things going on in different directions. But, staying busy is good, right?
So, if you follow me on Instagram, you probably know I was in Boston last weekend and the early part of this week. I was there for the Food and Nutrition Conference Expo (FNCE), for nutrition brands, companies, dietitians, and RD’s to be!
It was an amazing, yet overwhelming experience, to say the least. I am planning on doing a separate recap post because there is so much to say, and otherwise, this post would be way too long for a Friday.
I arrived in Boston around 6pm on Friday. My sister and her boyfriend scooped me from the airport, we headed straight to the Southend Buttery for dinner. We had high hopes of eating at Toro, a tapas place, but it was a 90 minute wait and we were hungry!
The downstairs had a cozy speakeasy feel to it. We enjoyed some bacon wrapped dates and mussles for appetizers, and I got the falafel veggie burger for dinner (just okay). I did enjoy a moscow mule and we split a bottle of red, while enjoying good conversation.
For dessert, we opted for Fomu, vegan ice cream, on the way home. After trying numerous flavors, I settled on the roasted caramelized parsnip, salted caramel and dried cherry.
Not a flavor I would generally order, but it was actually pretty darn good! We then went back the next night and I tried the cookies and cream.
Saturday morning, we got donuts from Blackbird Donuts, and split three flavors – the pumpkin cream cheese (I couldn’t not get this!), funfetti, and mint chocolate.
If you’re in the Boston area, you’ve got to try the funfetti – I think that won me over! But, that was only our appetizer.
We then headed to a place my sister told me I couldn’t miss in Boston: Flour Bakery. It was a cute little café with pastries, sandwiches, salads and coffee. I went with the Americano and egg breakfast sandwich.
How can you not love a bakery with this message?
Apparently, they are also known for their sticky buns. But, there are pecans on it so I couldn’t eat it, sadly. I then spent most of Saturday at a smaller recipe writing seminar.
Saturday night, my parents came up from Rhode Island and we got dinner at the Little Donkey. This was by far my favorite meal of the trip. If you’re in Boston, check it out! It’s in Cambridge, and is owned by the same owners as Toro.
Every tapa we tried was amazing – favorites included the BLT Lettuce Wraps, Vietnamese Bologna, Manti Ravioli, and Silver Queen Corn. The corn was so amazing. I wish I took more pictures but it was really dark in there.
I went to bed semi early on Saturday because I had to be up bright and early for a 6:30 breakfast session. Sunday was a long one, and after feeling drained the entire day, I learned to now overbook myself the rest of the week.
I took it a little easier on Monday and Tuesday. I didn’t put pressure on myself to attend the early 6:30 am breakfast session, but instead, slept in and went for a run along the Charles River esplanade.
After a more restful night sleep, I felt so much better and peppier both days.
Plus, Boston is gawwwgeous and is just asking to be explored.
And, I played hooky from some sessions so I could grab some yummy lunches (hello Sweetgreen and B Good).
We stayed in and made pizza one night – a ricotta, sweet potato, caramelized onion pizza. It was very good!
I’ll post my official FNCE recap next week about new food trends, things I learned, and what I wish I knew for all you studying RD’s to be out there, or even dietitians who are looking to go for the first time next year!
How do you bounce back to the real life after travel?

Support Bucket List TummyThanks , I have recently been searching for info about this topic for ages and yours is the best I’ve found out till now. But, what concerning the bottom line? Are you sure about the source?
Boston is my hometown so I was excited to see that you had the opportunity to travel there π
So happy to see that you had a good time and enjoyed some yummy food! Some old favorite spots of mine: Rosa Mexicano and Pizzeria Regina.
Thanks for the tips! Next time I’ll make sure to stop in there π
Boston is such a cool town. I love visiting because everything is so accessible and you can easily get there by foot or public transportation. Plus, the food’s great!
I agree! Such a lovely city full of great food options.
It looks like you had such a fun trip!
After travel, I’m usually itching to get back into routine – but sometimes I need to give myself a little time to get back into the swing of things! Especially if we’re traveling in different time zones!
I agree that a little time is necessary! It’s hard to go from one extreme to the next!
Love that you got to go to one of my favorite East Coast cities. That’s wonderful that you had family there and that you got to hang out with them and have some amazing food. That in home pizza looks AMAZEBALLS too! π
When was the last time you were in Boston? It really is a great city! Homemade pizza is one of my favorite things!
So jealous of your trip to Boston! I went to the last FNCE that was there (I think 2010?) and absolutely loved it. Looks like you had some great eats too, obviously the best part of traveling to a new city! Thanks for sharing.
Yesss, eating is totally the best part about new cities. I’m sorry I missed you at FNCE this year!
So bummed I missed you!!
I know! Next time for sure!!
So much good food in this post! Sounds like you had a great trip. Getting back into real life and work after a week in Oregon this past week has been rough. Haha. I am looking forward to catching up on lots of boring things this weekend – like cleaning, groceries, and meal prep! I think the hardest part has been getting back to eating normally (I was living it up post-marathon while on vacation) π
Haha, I love how you put it as boring things. Totally catching up on those, too! And yes, back to making my own food!
Usually after travel, I need a day to just be. To not have anything scheduled and just take my time. I end up doing laundry or getting groceries, but everything is very low key.
Your trip looked fun!
I agree.I wish I didn’t have clients the next day but that’s what a lot of time off can do. I needed that day to just catch up.
Its definitely a struggle to bounce back after being away. You just have to accept it and give yourself a week of feeling completely out of it and unfocused. It’ll come back though, and you’ll probably even be able to soak in all that you learned and experienced much better in a couple days.
You and your family always know the best places to go eat. Wanna be my travel advisor/restaurant specialist?
Have a great weekend and REST UP.
Yes, I would love to be your travel advisor/restaurant specialist. When’s your next trip?? π
Please come to Philadelphia and come out to eat with me! π
Yes! I’m sure I will be there at some point. I would love to go out to eat with you!!
OH MY GOSH! That pizza! The ice cream! Looks like I need to make a trip to Boston. After being away and when I try to get back on track, I usually clean out the fridge and make a grocery list immediately ha
Cleaning out the fridge is real. Except there wasn’t much to clean out. I ended up eating out every night – oops!
Ah so much good food! How lucky that your sister ended up living in the city where FNCE was! Family plus nutrition fun sounds great to me. Looking forward to your next post!
It was perfect. If all works out next year, I have a sister in Chicago too! π
