I Took A Resting Metabolic Rate Test

Here is a day in the life of when I took a resting metabolic rate test. You have to be fasting for an RMR test so see how I got through.

Before I took my rmr test, I wasn’t super well-versed on how hard it would be!

Yes, I counsel clients who do this, but doing it myself was a bit of a different experince. So, I thought I would walk you through my rmr metabolism test, so you know what to expect!

The Day Of My Resting Metabolic Rate Test

I wake up just before 7 and go downstairs to make coffee (always my first instinct) but then remember I have to fast for my RMR test.

I think how much of a struggle it’s going to be to go without coffee and breakfast until 9, so I prep my coffee protein smoothie for after the test.

Getting 25 grams of protein at breakfast is key for stabilizing my hunger later in the day.

For now, I think about going for a run to take my mind off of my hunger that I always wake up with, but I can’t do that either. That would stimulate my metabolism and I have to be at rest.

I feel like I’m a 2 on the intuitive eating hunger scale!

Instead, I drink lots of water and sit down to watch the news and read blogs (I’m trying not to look at pictures of food).

I am literally dying. I even ate a huge dinner and extra ice cream for dessert last night.

When it’s just before 8am, I head in to the office.

We offer metabolic testing for patients to measure their resting metabolic rates (within 99% accuracy!) to determine how we should make their meal plans, so I figured I’d get tested myself – which required my fasting state.

8:25-8:40ish – I get tested. I had to wear this contraption to get an accurate reading of my O2 inhaled and CO2 exhaled in a sitting position with my nose plugged, so I could only breathe out of my mouth.

I did this for about 10 minutes until it got a good reading.

My Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) was 1400, which is apparently very high for my age, height and weight. I thought it was pretty weird that I was 1400 on the dot.

What is Resting Metabolic Rate?

Your resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the number of calories you burn each day without doing a thing (aka laying in bed).

When we add in daily activities, such as walking downstairs, brushing our teeth, unloading the dishwasher, making coffee, etc., our bodies are “working” and essentially burning through calories at an even faster rate, especially if we add in planned exercise.

So the RMR is by no means a number you should aim for calorie-wise, but it’s a good gauge of what kind of metabolism you have at rest.

And then, depending on your lifestyle from there (activity, working conditions, stress, etc.), we can cater your nutrition.

overnight oats breakfast

8:47 am  – After my rmr test, I scarf down my portable breakfast without an ounce of shame of looking like a starved kid – overnight oats with bluebs, loads of PB, chia seeds, hemp seeds, cocao nibs, pumpkin + greek yogurt.

I then work on some meal plans and education powerpoints. We have a range of powerpoint topics that we keep on hand for patients, depending on their condition or needs.

I like making these! This one is on the Glycemic Index.

12: 36-1:03 – Lunchtime! I have a kale salad with grilled chicken, a hard boiled egg, and an eggplant hash mixture with a side of homemade tahini dressing.

I added some water and lemon juice to thin it out.

And a side of chocolate zucchini muffins. I also brought extra for the other gym workers.

1:15-4:15 ish – See clients. We had some Spanish-speaking clients so we used a translator.

I worked with a CDE today (Certified Diabetes Educator) so I actually learned a ton about insulin injections (insulin can be so tricky) and working with patients about lifestyle changes and how and when to test their blood glucose.

We can never stop learning as RD’s!

4:30 – For an afternoon snack, I have my favorite trail mix bars. I always make these in bulk to freeze.

They are a great snack because they offer fat, protein and carbs all in one!

Then I head home to change real quick and drive down to the city for a workout class.

I go for a walk along the greenway near the “Metropolitan” uptown district for the second day in a row. Although it was supposed to rain, it’s beautiful out.

I’ve done some pilates but had never done barre, so I was a bit intimidated going in.

I am fairly uncoordinated, definitely not into ballet, and don’t have much balance. Typical runner traits? But the teachers are so supportive and it really is for anyone.

Xtend barre

We did lots of leg squats and pulses, arm and core work – it truly is a total body workout.

Definitely a great strengthening workout and I fear what my legs are going to feel like today.

After the class, I come home to heat up leftovers of this sweet potato eggplant hash recipe.

Sauteed eggplant, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, kale and spices. Kind of like this vegan breakfast hash.

Then, it’s dessert and netflix on the couch with Ed as I write this post.

I’m kind of obsessed with Talenti ice cream.

This was cookie dough, which was good, but I think my favorite flavors are still caramel cookie and peanut butter pretzel!

Have you tried Talenti?

10:01 – Kindle reading in bed. I am really getting into When I’m Gone and have been staying up past my bedtime reading along in suspense!

  1. I love to run and find barre to be the perfect complement. I go to pure barre in birkdale..obsessed!!!
Never had metabolic testing done but I’ve always wanted it. And now I want Talenti!!

    1. I actually live much closer to Birkdale so maybe I’ll have to try that one out! That’s great to hear that you find it to be a good complement to running – that’s really what I’m looking for ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I’ve always been interested in having my metabolism tested as I’m someone who can never seem to gain weight even though I eat way more than Jesse (who seems to have the opposite problem to me!) but I’ve never actually looked into doing it properly! Looks like your metabolism is on fire, girl! ๐Ÿ˜›

Barre classes are something I really want to do, however, there aren’t any around us!

  3. I would love to have metabolic testing done! I am so curious to see what mine would be. I actually want to look into that now. I think when you know that you have to fast it makes it so much harder because you are constantly thinking about when you can finally eat!

    1. It is a really cool thing to have done and fascinating to figure out! And you’re totally right – all I could think about was when I could eat. I already knew WHAT I would eat.

  4. So fun to read! I’m a dietitian working toward becoming a CDE. Agreed the medication stuff if all new to me and it keeps me on my toes.
And I’ve done online bar but the price of the actual class always deters me…
Love you blog. I’ve wanted to get in to blogging for awhile but I get so nervous… You are brave to share

    1. Hi Ellie – thanks for commenting! That’s so awesome that you’re working on becoming a CDE! The one I was working with was telling me how there is such a need for more RD’s to get the CDE certification. It’s definitely something on my radar down the road.

  5. I’d love to have metabolic testing done. I wish I could have done it during marathon training and then compare it to now. Fasting, however, is the WORST. THE WORST

  6. It’s so valuable to find out what your resting metabolism is! I did something similar awhile back and it’s made all the difference in weight management.

  7. I loveee siggis. I need to try that Talenti gelato too! Barre is so much fun. I def want to try going more this summer! Have a great day ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. LOVE Talenti ice cream! I’ve only tried the salted caramel, but the other flavors sound amazing. I have a Pure Barre studio like four blocks from my house but haven’t tried it yet–it’s pretty pricey, but I’d like to do one class to see how I like it. I know a lot of other runners really enjoy it!

    1. Do they have a free intro class? The price usually deters me too, but I always take advantage of the free intro at the studios that have it. It was very low impact yet strengthening, which I really liked!

  9. Your day is super fun and interesting ! I have never had metabolic testing done….I have never done Xtend Barre, and I would love to try it. I am keen to do any form of exercise, so will be looking into this. Your eggplant hash sounds divine, so looking forward to that recipe.
OMW , the book you are reading, I went to check it out….sounds so good, I managed to read a few pages of it from the ‘surprise me’ section….so good, I do not think I would be able to put it down ! Enjoy the rest of your week. ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. SO cool to be seeing your transition from student to professional, Sarah ๐Ÿ™‚ I would have hard-core struggled with the no coffee/eating until 9:00 too haha! But really neat to have gotten a BMR reading! I’d love to have one done.

  11. First of all, that metabolic testing sounds fun, although it would be hard to fast in the morning. I would love to try a barre class. I’ve seen them in so many places. Talenti Gelato is the BEST. It’s like a treat. ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. Your job sounds so fun!! I always start the day with coffee too, so no coffee would be rough! That brre class sounds fun ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve taken a few barre classes and I’m always so sore the next day!

  13. I actually just got certified to teach Barre! It is a great, low impact, total Kody workout!
I’ve never had metabolic testing done, but I would be so curious to find out the results. Although waiting until after 9 to eat breakfast is definitely not so appealing.

  14. Very interesting. I’m wondering if these tests are just for use by dieticiens or are they becoming a common practice in the medical field?
I’ve never heard of that ice cream but those flavours sure perked me up!
That walk looked and sounds beautiful – what a nice way to end your work day. Can’t wait to be able to do the same outside!!

    1. I’m not sure if they will use them on a larger term medical scale – they are quite expensive I’m told, but I do think it gives valuable information! I’m sending warm weather vibes your way!

  15. So interesting.
I’ve never had the testing done—but now I’m curious.
And also staying up far too late reading (The Nest) so uncertain I could go even one morning sans caffeine.

  16. So cool! I’d be really curious to know what mine is. I feel for ya having to wait so long for coffee and breakfast. I’ve been putting off getting my cholesterol checked for that reason, lol!!
I actually have never tried that ice cream brand, but it looks so tempting in the freezer isle. Next time I will say you sent me.
I love hearing about what’s going on in your job! Sounds like a lot of room for using your creativity. Thanks for the podcast recommendation- I will check it out!
