Morning, friends! How was your weekend? I’m a little bitter about that Superbowl…

Though the game was in San Fran, I was running around the city on Sunday morning for the Superbowl 4 Miler, that started and ended at the Panther’s stadium. It was so so cold. I think the cold helped speed me up though.

I ran a PR (27:04) and won my age group, and Ed won his age group too!   Ed was so excited he closed his eyes..

I’m linking up with HoHo Runs and Trish for a week in review and Jill for Inspired To Be Fit! I have a fun little giveaway for you guys at the end of the post, but first, let’s chat about some running essentials I take with me on my runs.

I love the feeling of being able to just pop out the door into the fresh air and explore the territory around me. You know when you don’t have to drive to the gym, wait on anyone or anything, and can just head out and go? I can let go, let my thoughts wander, or bounce along to some 90’s jams (you know it happens). Whether I’m training for a race or not, though, I like some flexibility in my running plans and schedule. If I’m supposed to run 6 miles one day, and I only get 3 in, no biggie. Or if I’m supposed to run 4-5 days a week and I only run 3…it happens.

just run on and on

Nonetheless, I love running most for the endorphins and change in mood and mindset it can provide. I wrote about last week about the blahs, and as of recently, I’ve ultimately learned that incorporating some sort of exercise after those blah feelings really works. Sometimes you just need a day away from exercise, and to call a friend or watch a funny show, but in most cases, a run can help me. You guys had some great suggestions for how you deal with the blahs, which I’m going to remember for next time.

The things I usually take on my runs include my Garmin watch, a Nathan belt (NO BOUNCE!), and if it’s cold, I’ll make sure to take some gloves. I’ll also usually take my phone and some headphones that I stick right in my Nathan belt.

running necessities

If I’m running over 60-70 minutes, I’ll usually take a huma gel. I love these guys for so many reasons – they’re extremely portable, provide those necessary electrolytes and easy-to-digest carbs to continue to fuel the muscles during/after exercise, the flavors are out-of-this-world amazing, and there’s no GI discomfort for me. I’ve found that the GU’s just don’t sit well in my stomach due to their higher viscosity (and ingredient list), but HUMA is free of the maltodextrins and weird ingredients I can’t pronounce. And they have CHIA seeds – helllo, my favorite!

All of Huma’s products are also vegan and gluten-free and some of them have the option for caffeine, if you need that boost.

  1. Well, I’d have to admit to listening to some 70s funk. LOL. But I agree the freedom of just going out the door for a run is intoxicating! I missed that when I was injured last fall. Yes, I could cycle or go pool run but both of those required much more effort. Congratulations on your PR! Also on your and Ed’s age group placements. What a great day! I assume the “plus” on the Huma gels signifies it has caffeine. I would be very interesting in trying all the flavors without caffeine. I run better without it. Thanks for linking with us Sarah!

  2. I think I’d like to see how that Strawberry Lemonade tastes. I have not tried these I”m glad they are working out for you. Congratulations on your run too! That’s awesome! Thanks for the giveaway! I’ll also share it later in the week! Thanks for linking up with us!

  3. Wow, nice job on the age group award. I have never tried Huma gel but several in my running group use it. I have always used GU gels and they work great for me.

  4. Also – woah girl, you are speedy! 🙂 I’m still working to get under 30 minutes for my 5K let alone 4 miler. I’m at 33 right now, so 3 more minutes to shave off.

  5. So I’m generally not a fan of gels because of the texture but I’m wondering if maybe I’d do better with some other brands. I think the lemonade flavor sounds good!

  6. I bought some Huma gels but I’m afraid to try them! I have IBS and I don’t want to be stopping…

Congrats on your PR and AG! Maybe the cold weather agrees with you?

  7. Congrats on winning the race!!! So excited! I gotta tell my dad about Huma – he is just getting back into running after recovering from surgery and he is always looking for new ways to fuel!
