This yellow lentil hummus is great as protein-packed meatless Monday dinner or side. It also makes for a great party appetizer with chips or pita bread.

As a dietitian and mom who likes to host, I always prefer to give myself options. If hummus with lentils isn’t your cup of tea, I’ll have other options, too!

I like to have this creamy lentil hummus recipe out as a protein-rich option, and then our favorite Sweet Potato Hummus, which is more like a cookie dough dip and dessert, for a more kid-friendly alternative.

I like to appeal to the sweet tooths too!

I’ve always introduced lentils to toddlers and kids early on, so my kids do pretty well with lentils. This lentil hummus dip is a great baby led weaning lentil recipe!

Lentils can take on a variety of flavors, complement any dish as a topping or the main ingredient, and obviously, pack quite the nutritional punch.

This creamy lentil hummus recipe was my attempt at spicing them up for the kids. We also love veggie lentil meatballs for more of a handheld option!

What makes this yellow lentil hummus dip a little different is that we also have some veggies hidden in there – kale (or your choice of greens) and tomatoes! And it’s an easy hummus recipe with no food processor.

You Only Need a Handful of Ingredients

To make this lentil dip, you’ll need:

  • lentils – I used yellow, but you can also use green. I like to get them in bulk from Whole Foods, or I order these off Amazon and just have them delivered.
  • butter
  • olive oil
  • garlic
  • tahini paste – This is the key to the hummus consistency! I’ve found this one to be the best tasting and ideal consistency. Tahini gives anything a creamy, milky texture so you can imagine how this lentil dip with hummus will turn out.
  • lemons
  • spices – black pepper, cumin, curry powder, rosemary
  • tomato
  • kale or other greens of your choice

This is a hummus recipe without a food processor! It does take slightly more time, but it saves time in cleaning up!

How To Make My Favorite Yellow Lentil Hummus

I promise you – this lemon lentil recipe is tastier than any canned lentil dip! Plus, lentils are naturally cholesterol-free and gluten-free, so this healthy lentil dip can be great for heart health and specific dietary considerations.

Start by boiling your lentils. You will cook the lentils in a 3:1 ratio (3 cups of water per cup of lentils).

Once you bring to a boil, cover and simmer for about 15-20 minutes.

While the lentils are cooking, you can start melting the butter in a large pan. Add the olive oil and garlic.

Once the lentils are finished, add them to the same pan, along with the tahini, lemon juice, spices, rosemary, tomatoes and kale to make the lemon herb tahini hummus.

Stir for 3-5 minutes over medium-low heat and you have your lentil dip almost complete!

Hummus Without a Food Processor!

See, it’s totally possible to make hummus without a food processor! As the lentils boil, you may choose to mash some of make the lentil dip creamier. Adding the tahini will help with that, too!

Pairings For Your Creamy Hummus Dip

We love this as a dip, similar to my Pizza Beans recipe, which is ready in under 20 minutes! Pair with chips or pita bread for a lazy dinner or easy side or appetizer.

Dips are so versatile, whether they be for accompaniments to your main meal, appetizers for group get-togethers (or football games!). Have you tried this avocado bean dip yet?

We also love to snack on this lentil spread dip with veggies, chips or pita bread before enjoying our ground turkey sweet potato burgers, gluten free fish sticks or sweet potato nachos.

Chip dipping into lentil hummus

You can also use it as a topping for salads or over instant pot lemon rice or quinoa.

Also, I’m very partial to just eating it out of the pan. Less clean up!

If you try this easy lentil dip, make sure to leave a rating. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did in this household!

Pretty sure I’m going to be addicted to this dip! Sounds so delicious and has so many powerhouse ingredients 🙂 Yummed and pinned!

  3. I love these types of dips!!! Absolutely delicious and I definitely agree that Mediterranean flavors are simply the best. I bought a new Greek hummus this week (which is garlicky and has chickpea chunks) and I was practically licking the empty container, I can only imagine that this would be even better!

  4. You should give it a try! I think meshing it with lentils or something else is a great way to start.

  5. I love tahini! My dad was middle eastern and used to purchase it from a local ethnic food market. So good! Fresh market has a really good lentil soup that has a nice ingredient list if you’re ever short on time.

  6. Mmmm yum! I’m a big fan lentils… they are so versatile! Way to go Ed… he’s incredible!

  7. Yummm this reminds me of kale lentil lemon tahini salad I cook up – only amped up on the lentils. I would totally make this and just throw it inside a wrap or sandwich. Aren’t these the funniest dishes to experiement with? Just keep throwing things in till it’s right. Well done!!

  8. This dip looks so hearty. I just love lentils, but I don’t cook them very much. That needs to change, because this looks like such a filling, hearty nutritious snack for my family. And wow? Ed won that race after sleeping in an airport? I probably would have stumbled through a race like that.

    1. It’s definitely a filling snack or meal, we loveeee it. Ed lives in a world of his own!
