Does your smoothie intake increase exponentially in the summer? Because mine does.

This beetroot banana smoothie is really helping my veggie intake improve. There’s something about warm weather that makes me crave these cold, refreshing beverages more.

I usually just mix greek yogurt (I always add greek yogurt to smoothies), milk, protein powder, spinach and whatever fruits I have on hand.

And then I had the idea of adding leftover beets from our beet chocolate muffins, and here we are with this lovely beet and banana smoothie. Save some beets for this Butternut squash Beetroot Salad, too.

Why You’ll Love This Banana and Beet Smoothie

  • Veggie-rich and fiber-rich – As a Registered Dietitian, I’m always conscious of my fiber intake. Full of veggies, this beetroot banana smoothie is great for a filling meal or snack. If having an on-the-go breakfast, I prefer to add some greek yogurt and protein powder to reach the 25 grams of protein for breakfast!
  • Rich in several nutrients – Not only are you getting all the phytonutrients and fiber from the beets, but the spinach is adding additional Vitamin A, Vitamin K and folate, promoting healthy cells. And not to mention the ample Vitamin C from the mango will keep your immune system strong through.
  • Great for toddlers and kids – If you’re trying to introduce beets to toddlers, adding beets to a smoothie is a great way to do so! Or, try any of these amazing toddler smoothie recipes. And c’mon – you can’t deny the power of a beautiful smoothie color, like this banana turmeric smoothie. It feels a little more appealing to little mouths and minds.
  • Easy meal prep option – Mix the ingredients and store in the fridge in a blender overnight for easy blending in the morning. Or, freeze them all in smoothie bags and add to the blender with more liquid when ready. Whether it be as a pre or post workout snack or a meal in itself with all the toppings, this banana beetroot and spinach smoothie should be on your rotation.
  • Cold and refreshing – This tropical beet smoothie meets all of the refreshing smoothie criteria. If you’re someone who doesn’t know how to include beets in your diet, a banana and beet smoothie is a great starting point!

Ingredients

The next time you’re thinking about beetroot smoothie ideas, remember this beet smoothie recipe. Here’s what you need.

  • frozen banana – You can also use fresh, but I provide frozen for the texture! Bananas provides a natural source of sweetness.
  • frozen mango – Mango provides a tropical flavor, but you could also substitute with pineapple.
  • 1 medium beetroot (or 1/2 cup canned beets) – I love using fresh beets in smoothies because it decreases their messiness, compared to cooking or baking with them. Plus you still get all the nutritional benefits! However, if you prefer not to use fresh beets, you can make a canned beet smoothie recipe just as easily. You can use about 1/2 a cup of canned beets.
  • almond milk – I used vanilla almond milk, but use your choice of any milk
  • vanilla extract – optional
  • spinach or kale – I promise you won’t taste the greens, which are hidden by the sweet fruit in this beet banana smoothie. You could even use the actual beet greens to reduce food waste.
  • honey or maple syrup optional – provides some additional sweetness and disguises some of the beet flavors. For a vegan banana and beetroot smoothie, stick with maple syrup.
  • Coconut chips – optional but recommended for topping

Unlike my greek yogurt smoothies, this beet pre workout smoothie is a wonderful option BEFORE a run or workout since it has less protein, but enough carbohydrates.

Since this beet mango smoothie is lower in protein, your muscles can use the glucose more quickly and efficiently for exercise. Plus, beets are great for exercise and recovery.

We’ve been pretty conscious about including more beets for running, especially since we’re an avid running household and they have some advantageous benefits on enhancing blood flow for a race day nutrition plan too.

How To Make a 5 Minute Banana Beet Smoothie

This vegan beet smoothie recipe couldn’t get any easier. Just add all of your ingredients to a high speed and powerful blender (I highly love and recommend the Ninja) and press start.

Add fun toppings, like coconut chips, fruit, maple cinnamon granola, nuts/seeds or raisins if you like.

These toppings are fun, but also add healthy fats, fiber and some protein. If adding many toppings, I like to enjoy it in a bowl as a smoothie bowl.

Want to add more protein? Use a protein powder. I think vanilla protein powder would be your best bet, to really make sure you don’t mask the tropical flavors.

  1. 5 stars
This was my first time using beets in a smoothie. I used a baked golden beet so I wouldn’t have to deal with possible stains on my hands. Added vanilla protein powder and made it a meal. So glad I tried this recipe – it’s so delicious!

  2. What a great smoothie! How fun to add beets! I’ve never done that in a smoothie! But it looks SO good! Thanks for sharing and I hope that you have a great week!
    xoxo Cailee!

  3. Great combo and it looks amazing! Beets always make my heart skip a beet. Thank you for linking up with us for Meatless Monday!

  4. this looks so good! I always crave smoothies in the warm months too–its also great when theres such a wide variety of fruit in season!

    1. Definitely! It’s pretty forgiving whether you want to use pineapple, mango, peaches etc!

  5. I’ve been wanting to try a beet smoothie!! That color is insane. I’m sure it would be delightful with a little rum ?

  6. “Beet” the heat…such a cute name for this! I love beets but have never tried them in a smoothie!

    1. Thanks Diana! 🙂 Beets are great for runners so I’ve been adding them to my post run smoothies!

  7. That looks beautiful!! I love beets but have not tried adding them to a smoothie yet. Thanks for linking up w us for Meatless Monday

    1. Thank you Deborah! This was my first go at adding them to a smoothie and it was so easy!

  8. My goodness, so much gorgeousness in one picture! Im not a huge fan of beets unless they are juiced or in a smoothie, and I also hate having to cut them. I spiralized one once and got red stains EVERYWHERE. Apparently Im not very clean in the kitchen lol

    1. They definitely aren’t easy to deal with, my hands are always stained but I just wash them right away!

  9. Is it weird that I’ve never had a beet? I’m sure I’d like them, but I just never have had them, ha! I feel like this would be the perfect, “Intro to Beets” dish!

    1. I hadn’t had beets until a few years ago so I can relate, ha! This would definitely be a perfect introduction dish! Great for kids too 🙂

  10. Oh yesss! Cannot wait to make this. I’m not a smoothie person, but definitely the warm weather will bring in a few smoothie bowls. And I’ve always wanted to try beets in one, so this is perfect. Do you cook the beet or dice it up raw?? Also – your pics are looking fab.

Love what you did with the title there… you clever gal.

    1. I just diced it up raw! You could definitely use cooked or leftover as well. Thanks, lady!

  11. I used to add beets to my smoothies but then got lazy about having to peel them because they can be so messy! But once it warms up here I will be craving smoothies again so I will need to give this a try!

  12. Yum, so many fruit servings in one go!! Frozen mango is a very favorite of mine. It tastes a lot like ice creams!
I’ve been craving smoothies more often in this heat too. Especially after a run!
