As a Registered Dietitian and busy mom, I’m a huge fan of healthy breakfast muffins for kids.

Especially ones that can pack in fiber and protein for satiety and stable blood sugar.

I love Thrive Market for healthy kids snacks, but when I have the time and energy to make something in my own kitchen, I’m in.

And many muffin recipes for kids are ready in under 30 minutes. And they can pack a punch of nutrition.

So, why not make some kid friendly breakfast muffins at home?

Why You Should Consider Healthy Breakfast Muffins for Kids

So many reasons, but here are some of the reasons we make muffins at home.

  • Portable and great for on the go – Whether you want protein-rich egg muffins for toddlers, or fruit muffins for kids, taking the time to put together easy healthy breakfast muffins can be a great way to start the day and add protein for kids. Pair with a piece of fruit, a toddler yogurt pouch, or even a hard boiled egg.
  • Great for meal prep and freezing for later – Muffins are the epitome of meal prep snacks! They are so easy to make in bulk and freeze for later in a stasher bag or airtight container.
  • Easy way to add fiber– Toddlers are known for their mentality of loving something one day and not the next. I especially love these breakfast muffins for toddlers to get extra fiber in through whole wheat or chickpea flour, flax seeds and fruits/veggies. We usually pair with peanut butter or yogurt for more protein!
  • Personalizable for allergies and intolerances – One of my favorite parts about making muffins at home is how you can cater to different wants and needs. Certain allergies can be accommodated with different flours, flax eggs, and dairy-free alternatives, for instance.
  • Save money – We love buying muffins out at a bakery or even the muffins from Costco, but making them at home is a great way to save money since you can always freeze them for later. Depending on how many toddlers or kids you have, you could be saving a lot of money by making healthy breakfast muffins for kids at home!

Ingredient Ideas for Muffins for Kids

Here are some of my favorite ingredients for kid friendly breakfast muffins.

  • Eggs – Eggs are a great protein-rich and micronutrient-rich ingredient for muffins. Plus, they act like a binder in baked goods.
  • Oats – Oats are a great source of complex carbohydrates and fiber to help provide lasting energy for your kiddos. They also taste great in whole form or ground into oat flour, and are a great base for many of the muffins below.
  • Sweetpotato – Perhaps one of my favorite add-in’s (you’ll see plenty of sweetpotato muffin recipes), sweetpotato adds a natural sweetness to any muffin recipe, as well as fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, potassium and more. A true winner!
  • Pumpkin – Like sweetpotatoes, pumpkins add great fiber and nutrition, and a natural sweetness. They are a great alternative to mashed banana or applesauce.
  • Zucchini – Zucchini is one of those veggies that’s so easy to sneak into a breakfast muffin because you don’t taste it at all, but you get the extra nutrition!
  • Whole wheat flour – Compared to all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour adds a bit more protein and fiber – two important thing for growing kids. I also love using oat flour, almond flour or even chickpea flour for some – you’ll find plenty of recipes below!
  • Banana – Add that fiber, potassium and magnesium in with a banana, which can also act as a natural sweetener for those healthy breakfast muffins for kids!
  • Peanut butter – Peanut butter, almond butter, sunflower seed butter or even soy butter are a great muffin addition. They add a nice creaminess, as well as protein, fiber and healthy fats.
  • seedschia seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds – All of these seeds add a plethora of micronutrients without changing the flavor and taste. I love them all for protein, fiber, healthy fats, and even micronutrients like iron, calcium, magnesium and more. The nutrition content differs slightly with each choice, but I like to stock up on my Thrive Market orders.

Healthy Breakfast Muffins for Kids Ideas and Recipes

Depending on your mood, your child’s taste preferences and what you have on hand, here are 10 of my favorite healthy breakfast muffins for kids!

They pair with so many other healthy ingredients to make a full, balanced meal. Here are some other healthy toddler breakfast ideas for pairing.

1. Butternut Squash Egg Muffins

These work well for babies and young toddlers who are still open to trying anything!

The butternut squash adds a natural sweetness to these butternut squash muffins, like you’d expect from pumpkin or sweetpotato, and this is also another delicious savory option to get some veggies in.

I also love adding bacon for a crunch and more protein!

2. Spinach Feta Muffins

My kids actually really enjoy feta cheese, so these spinach feta muffins are a hit with them.

You can personalize the veggies you add in, or try another cheese! You can also leave out the spinach if your kids give it the major yuck.

3. Strawberry Chickpea Flour Muffins

These strawberry chickpea flour muffins are a favorite in our house.

I love to use strawberries that are on their way out and almost ready to throw out, BUT don’t throw them out!

Reduce that food waste and use them in these muffins. You could also make them with another fruit.

4. Pumpkin Zucchini Muffins

Whether you prefer pumpkin zucchini muffins or sweetpotato zucchini muffins, both are perfectly sweet yet full of veggies, antioxidants, and Vitamins A and C.

You don’t have to add the chocolate chips, but we love them. I also love the mini chocolate chips to reduce the sugar a bit.

Pair with a hard boiled egg or yogurt for a complete breakfast on the go!

This is hands down the easiest way to expose toddlers and kids to veggies if you struggle getting veggies into toddlers.

5. Banana Oatmeal Almond Flour Muffins

Banana Oatmeal Almond Flour muffins are great for fullness and satiety, thanks to the high fiber and protein content.

Plus, they’re just really delicious with the banana adding a natural sweetness!

6. Acorn Squash Muffins

These are a fun option! Acorn squash muffins offer fiber from white whole wheat flour (a little fluffier than whole wheat flour), raisins and acorn squash, of course!

Nutritious, quick to cook and easy to freeze.

Here’s a great recipe to use that high-fat, high-protein almond flour.

These almond flour zucchini muffins are high in healthy fats that help with so many things, especially growing brains.

8. Gluten Free and Dairy Free Blueberry Muffins

If you have dietary restrictions or intolerances, I love these gluten and dairy-free blueberry muffins.

Of course, you can use dairy versions if you don’t have allergies or intolerances.

They are extra delicious, and the crumb topping is the best!

9. Beet Chocolate Muffins

If you haven’t introduced your toddlers or kids to beets yet, doing so through beetroot chocolate muffins is the way to go!

They are slightly sweet, extra fudgy and a great healthy muffin option!

10. Chocolate Zucchini Muffins

There’s some truth about bribing your children with chocolate – it just tastes good!

But, they’re also getting zucchini, protein and fiber in these chocolate zucchini muffins, so it’s all good and balanced.

Plus, they’re made with chickpea flour for extra protein and fiber.

While this recipe does use some coconut sugar, it uses much less than you’d expect, especially since two bananas help sweeten these healthy breakfast muffins.

Storage Tips

  • You can freeze any of these simple muffin recipes. I like to freeze them in stasher bags or airtight ziplock bags.
  • Make sure to let them cool completely before freezing, and try to freeze in a single layer if possible.
  • You can freeze for up to 3 months.
  • To reheat, place on a plate and microwave in 15-second increments. You can also place them in the refrigerator and thaw overnight for a perfect lunchbox snack!
