I love including more plant based snacks in our routine and you can do so much with canned beans!

These roasted chickpeas with bbq seasonings are delicious and easy to grab and go.

I often recommend them as healthy snacks for athletes because chickpeas offer protein, fiber and so many micronutrients. Plus, these maple chickpeas are easy to throw on meals, too.

Because of this, high protein roasted chickpeas make great options for healthy postpartum snacks, too.

They are so easy to throw on top of any salad, like a mango quinoa salad or this sweet potato quinoa salad.

BBQ Roasted Chickpeas Ingredients

To make these delicious bbq chickpeas recipe, youโ€™ll need:

  • chickpeas (rinsed, dried and peeled โ€“ see below)
  • BBQ sauce โ€“ storebought or homemade
  • butter
  • maple syrup
  • garlic powder
  • paprika

The spice combination almost gives them a smoked chickpeas taste that is balanced by the sweetness of the bbq sauce.

We also love adding the nutrition of chickpeas into recipes like vegan edible cookie dough or vegan pumpkin blondies and roasted chickpea sandwiches.

They are so versatile and the recipes and options are almost endless.

How to Bake BBQ Chickpeas

I know roasting chickpeas may sound like it takes forever, but these maple roasted chickpeas really only need 15-25 minutes in the oven.

The prep work does take a little more time, though.

Depending on whether youโ€™d like to save time, or have extra crispy chickpeas, will dictate how long you want to spend making this.

To get started, preheat your oven to 425 (for a convection oven, preheat to 400).

While youโ€™re waiting for the oven to preheat, rinse the chickpeas and spread them on a dish mat or paper towels, and pat them dry.

Now for the optional part; peel the skins off the chickpeas. If you give them a light squeeze, the skin will come off, and you can discard it, as so.

I know that this part is labor intensive, but if you change your mindset around it, and do it with your favorite music or podcast and perhaps a glass of wine, I promise it gets better.

Next, mix your bbq sauce, melted butter maple syrup, garlic powder, and paprika in a small bowl. I promise these sweet and spicy roasted chickpeas are worth it.

Spread your chickpeas on a baking sheet and grease with olive oil or cooking spray. Roast for 10 minutes.

Take the chickpeas out of the oven and mix the bbq sauce mixture over them evenly.

Put chickpeas back in the oven for 13-15 minutes. Toss halfway through baking if you can.

Recipe Tips for Sweet and Spicy Roasted Chickpeas

  • Peel the skin โ€“ What I did differently for this roasted bbq chickpeas recipe that I havenโ€™t done in the past is actually peel the skin off of each chickpea. And yes, I did notice a difference! I know no one wants to spend 10-15 minutes doing this, but it really helps make them extra crispy, if thatโ€™s how you like them. If you have older kids, maybe you can enlist them in helping.
  • Switch up the seasonings โ€“ You can adapt the seasonings to your taste preferences. You can make your own barbecue sauce and leave the other ingredients out if youโ€™d prefer.

Otherwise, put on your favorite playlist or podcast and get to work.

You could even do this the night before if you wanted to save time.

How to Store BBQ Roasted Chickpeas

I like to store mine in an airtight ziplock bag or paper bag. If you donโ€™t plan on eating them within a day or two, store them in a tupperware or airtight storage container in the fridge for up to a week.

They wonโ€™t stay crispy for over a day or two, but thatโ€™s a great reason to enjoy them as a healthy snack before then.

Make sure they cool completely before transferring them to a container or bag.
