This chicken sweetpotato chili is no different – just with added nutrition.
We tend to play around with different chili recipes each week. During football season, my husband would make it each week.
It was our good luck charm for the Eagles, who went on to win the Super Bowl.
Should we be thanking this chicken and sweetpotato chili? Probably!

The good thing is that we didn’t have to bribe our kids to eat this.
Not that we ever bribe them – that’s something that goes against my values of teaching intuitive eating to kids.
They truly just enjoy this recipe – Especially when paired with tortilla chips and guacamole.
I think it helps that sweetpotatoes are naturally sweet and visually enticing. They add a pop of color to any recipe – kind of like this pumpkin chicken chili!

How to Make Chicken Chili with Sweetpotatoes
When making this chicken chili on the stove, heat oil or butter in a pot over medium-high heat.
Add your diced onions and cook until translucent, and then add in your garlic cloves.

Next, add in the broth, diced tomatoes, ground chicken, spices and diced sweetpotatoes, adding extra oil as needed.
Then, cover the pot and bring to a boil, cooking for 10-15 minutes to soften the sweetpotatoes and cook the chicken.

Afer 10-15 minutes, give the chili a stir, and return the pot to medium-high heat and cook for 5-10 minutes, continuing to check on the chicken.
Having a good food thermometer is a good practice to ensure your chicken is cooked through!
Once the chicken is cooked through, add the canned beans in last and give it a stir.
Turn the heat off, and cover the chili until ready to serve.

Serve with any of your favorite toppings, like chips, shredded cheese, avocado, sour cream/yogurt etc.
FAQ and Tips for Success
Here are some tips that I recommend for the best outcome.
- Peeling sweetpotatoes – While some people may prefer to peel sweetpotatoes, you don’t have to. I actually prefer not to because the skin is full of fiber and antioxidants and it doesn’t change the flavor or texture at all, since the skin softens as it cooks.
- If you want some additional protein and nutrients, I recommend swapping bone broth in for chicken broth. It’s more flavorful and full of collagen and several micronutrients.
- I prefer to add the ground chicken and sweetpotatoes in together at the beginning. However, you could cook/soften the sweetpotatoes first in the broth, and then add in the chicken, which will cook quickly.
- You can use the same process if subbing in ground turkey or ground beef for the ground chicken. You can also use diced chicken breasts.
- Note that the sodium content of this chicken and sweetpotato chili will be dependent on many things. To reduce the overall sodium, opt for low-sodium canned beans (and make sure to rinse them to further reduce sodium!), low-sodium broth and low-sodium canned tomatoes.
