We’ve had our fair share of rainy and overcast days, and it went from a beautiful fall to brutally cold, in my opinion, overnight.
I was making some hot chocolate one afternoon, when I thought of adding bone broth, only because I wanted more protein and I bought some in bulk from costco.
But, then I realized that there could be something to this hot chocolate with bone broth, and it could be great for some other benefits, too!
Plus, if you’re in the holiday spirit, it pairs beautifully with gingerbread banana bread or gingerbread protein pancakes.
I also decided to add a scoop of collagen since I’m used to adding collagen to coffee and hot drinks, but that part is totally optional.
Just in my mind, collagen and bone broth are like sisters, and both have some nourishing properties to them.
They both dissolve easily so there’s no weird texture issues.

“I love chocolate anything, so I combined my love for a creamy nut butter with chocolate flavor to produce a healthy and easy homemade chocolate cashew butter. “
Why You’ll Love This Bone Broth Hot Chocolate Recipe
Despite what you would think, hot chocolate with bone broth does not have an animal/skeletal flavor to it. You really don’t even notice it’s there.
Here are some other reasons you’ll love this perfect cup of hot chocolate.
- Great for joint health and other benefits – Bone broth is high in protein and does offer several health benefits. Bone broth is made by simmering animal bones and connective tissue, so it retains collagen and nutrients from the bones of the animal. It also provides protein, which is something that many Americans may be getting at dinner, but not spreading throughout the day.
- Warming and nourishing – The body loves warm drinks and soups. I have written about this in postpartum nutrition, and that many other countries know that a warming liquid can help heal and soothe the body. This bone broth hot chocolate recipe can warm you up and provide a dose of nutrition.
- Good for hydration – Bone broth is high in electrolytes, like sodium and potassium, so it’s great for hydration. Depending on which kind of milk you use, you can also add additional electrolytes. For instance, dairy milk offers sodium, potassium and calcium.
- Ready in minutes – Whether you have an instant sweet tooth come on or you just want something quick to sip on, this collagen hot chocolate with bone broth is a filling option with as much or as little sweetness as you’d prefer!
Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make this recipe.
- bone broth – Since bone broth is made from animal bones (usually chicken or beef, but sometimes pork), you can’t really make this recipe vegan. You could substitute vegetable stock but you lose the nutritional benefits of bone broth. Note that beef bone broth may be a little child than the mild chicken broth recommended. You can also make your own bone broth by simmering animal bones.
- unsweetened cocoa powder – If you wanted, you could use a hot chocolate mix but those are usually high in added sugars. I prefer to control the sugar myself after the base of cocoa powder or cocoa powder.
- milk of choice – I’m a full-fat dairy girl, but oat milk, coconut milk, or even coconut cream are all options if you wanted a vegan hot chocolate.
- cinnamon – A little bit goes a long way!
- vanilla – Vanilla extract is optional, but I find that it balances the bitterness of cocoa powder a bit.
- sugar – You could also opt for honey or pure maple syrup.
- sea salt – Amazing for topping.
- collagen – Adding collagen powder is optional, but I always do it for extra protein! Collagen does need Vitamin C for absorption, so pair this with fruit with Vitamin C (oranges, strawberries, mango) for better absorption.
- cocoa nibs – These are optional for the topping, but I love their chocolate flavor, crunch and nutritious properties!
How to Make Bone Broth Hot Cocoa
Bone broth chocolate is easy to make! If you wanted it cold (like in a smoothie or shake), you’d follow the same protocol, just not heat it.
You’ll start by adding your cocoa powder, milk, bone broth, sugar, salt and vanilla to a medium pot over medium high heat.
Once you bring it to a boil, give it a stir, and then remove it from heat.
Then, you’ll transfer your bone broth hot cocoa to a blender. This part is also optional, but I love how frothy and creamy it makes it – creamy bone broth is delicious!
You could also use a hand blender (I have this for making my homemade lattes).
Then, just pour into mugs and enjoy!
I love topping with whipped cream and cocoa nibs, for some extra chocolate and nutrition!
