As a busy mom of three, I’m always relying on the majority of our meals to be quick and easy.
And that’s exactly what these salmon patties with sweetpotato are. Ready in minutes with just a handful of ingredients!
You don’t even need the oven because you can microwave your sweetpotato.
And as a Registered Dietitian, I love that these used canned salmon to help us meet our omega-3 DHA and EPA needs.

Newsflash – the majority of people are NOT getting enough of these essential fatty acids.
And because fresh fatty fish can be expensive, we love canned salmon as a top pantry staple because the nutrition is just as good.
When blended with sweetpotatoes in these sweetpotato salmon cakes, they don’t taste very fishy and they are just delightful.
Why You’ll Love Sweetpotato Salmon Cakes
- Ready in 15 minutes – Say no more! 15 minutes is even an exaggeration, you could probably have it ready sooner, especially if you have cooked sweetpotatoes (from meal prep earlier in the week).
- Great source of omega-3 fatty acids – The majority of us aren’t eating fatty fish twice a week, and even if we are, we still may not be getting enough. This is at least a budget-friendly way to include seafood for those benefits!
- Budget-friendly – Canned salmon is so much more affordable than fresh! We actually buy them in bulk as part of our Costco staples, and use them in these salmon sweetpotato patties recipes often.
- Iron + Vitamin C – This is totally a dietitian thing, but I’m always cognizant of including a Vitamin-C source with iron to help with absorption! The Vitamin C from the sweetpotatoes can aid in iron absorption from the salmon.
- Great for babies and kids– If you’re doing baby led weaning and wanting to introduce seafood, these sweetpotato salmon cakes are a great way to do so! I started it as a baby led weaning food for 7 months, but introduce it as you feel comfortable!
Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make this recipe:
- cooked sweetpotato – I prefer to microwave for 5-7 minutes in the microwave! But if you like the taste of baked sweetpotatoes, you could cook that way, just allow more time.
- canned salmon – You could also use canned tuna or sardines! I prefer Wild Planet because they source carefully and sustainably.
- egg – I didn’t try this with a flax egg, I would recommend just using an egg.
- panko – Panko or breadcrumbs both work!
- garlic powder
- onion powder (optional)
- cumin (optional)

If you want to add more veggies, some options could be diced onion, pepper or zucchini, like these zucchini salmon patties. Let your heart guide you!
How to Make Salmon Sweetpotato Cakes
Don’t be intimidated about the time needed because you don’t need to bake your sweetpotatoes!
If you have leftover baked sweetpotatoes, those will work because they are already cooked and you can scoop the mash out.
If not, just microwave them for 6-8 minutes! Then, let them cool and scoop out the mash and add it to a medium bowl.
Add the canned salmon, egg, panko and spices and mix well.

Then, form your batter into small patties, or even mini meatballs if you’re serving little mouths.
Add some oil to a cooking pan over medium-high heat. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until done.
Then, just let them cool before serving! I love these as a one year old lunch idea.

Tips for Success
Here are some tips that I recommend for the best outcome for your salmon cakes with sweetpotato.
- Opt for gluten-free breadcrumbs if you want these to be gluten-free.
- You can modify the spices if you’d like! If you like your salmon and sweetpotato cakes spicier, you can use smoked paprika, red pepper flakes, or add some hot sauce!
- For adding small amounts of diced veggies, I love this vegetable chopper because it gives a fine dice which is easy to incorporate into the patties.
