I can’t even tell you how quickly we go through nut butters in our house.
I’ll spare you numbers and just say…very quickly. Usually, it’s peanut butter since that is our tried and true favorite, like this cinnamon peanut butter.
We also love almond butter, but that can get pricy very quickly.
But, since we found out I’m NOT allergic to cashews, we’ve been buying them more and more.
And I figured I’d try my hand at cashew butter with chocolate, because why wouldn’t you add chocolate?
If you haven’t tried to make your own creamy cashew butter, this should be on your list because it’s easily the best homemade cashew butter recipe ever, and dare I say, the new peanut butter.
Of course, I enlisted the help of the girls and we all tasted as we went.
It’s fabulous and I promise that you will love this cashew chocolate spread.
Why Sarah Loves this Recipe
“I love chocolate anything, so I combined my love for a creamy nut butter with chocolate flavor to produce a healthy and easy homemade chocolate cashew butter. “
Why We Love Chocolate Cashew Butter
- Kid friendly – Kids love chocolate, so chocolate cashew butter is an easy homemade toddler snack or fun back to school snack! I love knowing that the total sugars are less than something overly sweet I’d buy at the store.
- Ready in minutes – Got some cashews in bulk? We get ours from Thrive Market. Put them in your food processor with some melted chocolate chips and you’ve got an instant snack to serve with fruit, chips, bread and more.
- Controlled ingredients – If you’re sick of buying cashew butter with trans fat, hydrogenated oils, additional sugars or sugar alcohols, this homemade cashew butter is the perfect dip or toppings for you! Plus, it’s a great way to save money!
- Goes on so many things! Of course, we love versatile recipes here. This cashew chocolate butter is great on fruit (apples and bananas!), in toddler smoothies, on toast, with chips, graham crackers and so much more. In fact, spreading it on a banana is one of my favorite breastfeeding snacks!
Ingredients for DIY Cashew Butter
Here’s what you’ll need to make this unbelievably tasty recipe.
- raw cashews – I just buy them in bulk on subscribe and save or from Thrive Market! You can buy organic cashews, salted or unsalted cashews.
- coconut oil – If you’re not a fan of coconut oil, you can use a different oil choice, but I find that it’s pretty neutrally flavored and really helps speed this up.
- chocolate chips – Use Enjoy Life to keep this recipe vegan and dairy free.
- sea salt – For flavor. Note that if you’re using salted cashews, you may be able to omit or reduce the sea salt in the recipe.
- Food processor – You’ll want to have a high-speed blender or food processor. I have an older model of this 9 cup Kitchen Aid and love it.
- Cocoa powder – Many chocolate cashew recipes use cocoa powder. I found that my version was perfect with just chocolate chips, but you can certainly add cocoa powder if you prefer.
Hot Tip
Try using dark chocolate chips to make a dark chocolate cashew butter!
You could also buff this cashew butter recipe with some nutritious add ins, like:
- chia seeds
- hemp seeds
- flax seeds
- raisins
- white chocolate chips
- other nuts/seeds
- maple syrup or honey – I thought my cashew chocolate butter was plenty sweet, but if you prefer to add more sweetness, maple syrup, unrefined coconut sugar, liquid sweeteners, honey or agave all work well.
I buy most of mine from Thrive Market!
How to Make Cashew Butter with Chocolate
Making DIY cashew butter couldn’t be easier with these simple ingredients.
Nut butters are expensive, while buying nuts in bulk and making your own homemade cashew butter is much more cost-effective.
Plus, it’s fun because you can control exactly what goes in.
The process takes a total of 5-7 minutes.
- Add cashews to food processor and process.
- After a minute or two, the cashews will be broken down and start to form clumps. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula and then continue to process.
3. As you continue to process and the mixture begins to smooth out, you’ll add your melted coconut oil and melted chocolate chips.
Kids love to add chocolate, so I’ll usually let them stir the melted chocolate chips to prepare it for adding in.
Then, have them spoon it into the food processor with a pinch of salt.
It’s like magic and you can watch the mixture turn to chocolate cashew butter!
Tips and Questions
- How much does this recipe make? Mine made about 1.5-2 cups. A serving size is a tablespoon.
- My cashews aren’t smoothing out…What am I doing wrong? If your cashews aren’t making a smooth butter, they may need more oil to help them process, or you just may need to process them longer. Make sure you are using a high powered food processor.
- How to store chocolate cashew butter: You can store your homemade cashew butter either in the fridge or covered tightly on the counter in an airtight container or covered mason jar. If you store it in the fridge, it will firm up slightly so won’t be as “drippy.” However, it will last much longer in the fridge.
