Each week, I’ve been meal prepping one breakfast (egg muffins or a peach baked oatmeal), some snacks (hard boiled eggs or a strawberry muffins), and an easy dinner recipe. Three recipes is manageable for me right now and it gets us through a majority of the week, and the other nights are easy to put together quick meals.
I’ve been relying on these turkey and apple burgers for easy dinners because they are fun and customizable, like so many sweet potato recipes!

I know the combination of apple in a turkey burger may seem a little odd, but turkey burgers with grated apple are amazing and delicious. Grated apple adds a tinge of sweetness or tartness (depending on which variety you use), and a pleasant crunch.
We’ve also upped the nutrition with some sweet potatoes (inspired by my popular ground turkey sweet potato burgers) because they mold into burgers SO WELL.
I’ve even made these into turkey burger sliders (aka smaller turkey burgers), more bite size, and they are the perfect appetizer for a crowd!

One of my favorite things to do in the summer is grill out. Hands down, I think food tastes better on the grill – fish, steak, burgers, veggies – what have you. The grill just adds a whole new yummy dimension, especially to any summer turkey burger recipes.
Plus, eating al fresco is fun and another of my favorite things. We ate outside at the beach often last week and we do it at home on our deck too, as long as it’s not too hot. It’s a great way for us to get some fresh air but feel secluded as well.
I think the seasoning you use when grilling or making burgers makes all the difference. That is definitely the case with this sweet potato burger recipe.
The secret seasoning here is a blend of ground ginger, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, black pepper and sea salt. And use a quality sea salt!

Chose what type of apple you’d like to use. I use gala every time because that’s my favorite but any kind will work! Grate your apple into a medium-sized bowl.
Add the spices, mashed sweet potatoes and ground turkey. Use your hands to shape the mixture into 5-6 medium sized patties.
Then, toss the patties onto the grill or a skillet over medium high heat.
If you like toasted buns, you can also throw some buns in the oven for 3-5 minutes at 350 to get them crisp.

I think you can accomplish so many different flavors just by changing the cheese! A soft goat cheese would taste delicious as well, in contrast to a sharp cheddar. I happen to love strong apple cheddar turkey burgers, but it may depend on your mood.
Other toppings I have added include lettuce or cabbage, crunchy pickles and even sliced beets. All options were delicious.
My favorite way to enjoy these mini turkey burgers is for a post-run meal since they offer an ideal balance of protein and carbohydrates. Plus, lots of antioxidants from the sweet potatoes. I like to pair these with some chips and watermelon, but you do you!
As you can guess, these didn’t last long in our house and I’m sure they won’t in yours either. Maybe make a double or triple batch and freeze some for later because these healthy turkey apple burgers freeze well.
To freeze your turkey and apple burgers, take the raw ground turkey mixture and individually wrap the patties and place them in a large freezer-safe container or ziplock bag (these are my favorite freezer ziplock bags). Then, when ready to cook them, let them thaw in the fridge overnight and then toss them on the grill or stove.
To freeze cooked burgers, make sure to let them cool completely. Then, either wrap them individually or place them in the freezer-safe ziplock bag. When reheating them, pop them in the microwave for a few minutes and they’ll be ready to go.
They may be a little mushy, so you could also toast them in a toaster oven if you prefer them to be firmer.
