I’m popping in today to share one of my newest recipe obsessions, this easy turkey burger with sweet potato. You’re going to want to make these ground turkey and sweet potato burgers this week – they are that good!

If you’re a doubter, read on. I bet you wouldn’t imagine that a sweet potato turkey burger can make such a delicious combination.

But, ground turkey and sweet potato recipes are a match made in heaven and a combination that I think I need to experiment further with now.

These turkey sweet potato burgers are full of Vitamin A, antioxidants, healthy carbohydrates and fiber.

Ground Turkey Sweet Potato Burgers Are:

  • Easy and Quick
  • Juicy
  • Flavorful
  • Great for meal prep
  • Ideal for a weeknight dinner or for entertaining
  • Bunless turkey burger (gluten free) though they taste great with buns, too

What else could you want in a burger?

While I used ground turkey, you could easily use ground chicken or beef for these healthy burgers.

These can be a great paleo burger option or whole30 turkey burgers with sweet potato, but I’m not much into labeling foods or diets.  In other words, I prefer to refer to them as wholesome and satisfying sweet potato patties with ground turkey.

You may be surprised to learn that sweet potatoes are versatile and pretty much mesh into anything.

If you can’t tell by my recipe page, I love them and can pretty much find a way to incorporate them into everything.

How Do You Cook Healthy Ground Turkey and Sweet Potatoes?

To make these turkey sweet potato patties, you’ll want to first cook your sweet potato.

I actually prefer the microwave method for cooking the sweet potatoes because it’s the quickest, especially if you don’t prepare. It also makes the sweet potato flesh and skin nice and soft, which you want for these patties.

Normally, I like my sweet potatoes and sweet potato fries to be crisp, but not when we’re talking about these flavorful sweet potato burgers.

Crisp on the outside but soft on the inside = more flavor.

Once you have your cooked sweet potato, mash it in with the ground turkey and spices, spreading that flavor and texture all around.

Mold the turkey sweet potato patties into your desired burger or patty shape and throw them in the oven, on the grill or a skillet.

Can Turkey Burgers Be Cooked In The Oven?

You can cook these in the oven, on the stove or on the grill!

If you choose to bake them in the oven, set it to 350 and once you form your patties, bake for 25-30 minutes, flipping once halfway!

How To Cook Sweet Potato Turkey Burgers On The Stove

I prefer to cook them on the stove because we can do that year round and there’s no need to fire up the grill.

Plus, cooking turkey burgers on stove is easy and seamless, and flavorful, especially with a cast iron skillet

After molding your patties, cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side.

They should be cooked through, but a good way to verify is with a food thermometer. Turkey burgers should be cooked to 165 degrees.

What Toppings Should You Add To Paleo Turkey Burgers?

If you’re omitting the bun and going for a paleo turkey burger recipe, then the toppings become all the more important.

Toppings can really transform a burger from average to unbelievable.

I’m sure you have your own preferences and likes for toppings as well – that’s half the fun of making and eating a burger, isn’t it?!

I pretty much always want sauteed onions and roasted peppers because they just impart so much flavor. Both vegetables impart the perfect texture for a burger, and bonus, they give extra nutrients!

You could also consider

  • roasted tomatoes
  • pickles and/or relish
  • lettuce, arugula or spinach
  • cilantro
  • cheese
  • barbecue sauce
  • avocado (perfect for taste, texture and healthy fats!)
  • quality sea salt (for extra flavor!)

If you’re not going for a bunless turkey burger recipe, buns and toast are always welcome for more taste and satisfaction.

Turkey sweet potato patties are great for feeding little ones, too!

Both baby led weaning meatballs and zucchini salmon patties are loved by our toddler, and also an easy way to introduce seafood.

What Should You Pair With Sweet Potato Turkey Burgers?

These turkey sweet potato burgers go beautifully with

a Mango Lime Quinoa Salad or these spinach sweet potato tater tots. I also like serving it with a fruity salad option, like this cantaloupe pineapple salad recipe

Both are perfect for a summer picnic or barbecue.

Another great option to pair with paleo turkey burgers as a topping or side/appetizer is Avocado Bean Dip.

For vegetables, crispy turmeric baked cauliflower is a fun, light side vegetable dish. Or, if you prefer something heavier and more comforting, crispy parsnip fries are another option!

  1. I’ve made a lot of similar recipes in my slow cooker. I wouldn’t be able to survive with out my slow cooker. Thanks for sharing your recipes.

  2. I have stuffed chicken breast before, with feta cheese and arugula or something like this. And my Family was indeed impressed ???? The Caprese combo sounds pretty amazing.

  3. Very useful information. Presently dealing with an open wound due to Venus insuffiency. What do u think is profitable? Eating foods with zinc or taking zinc picolinate supplements to somewhat strengthen vein walls. Thank you.

  4. What an awesome idea. I buy ground beef and chicken in 5lb bulk bags and have always divided it up ready to cook and stored in the freezer, but pre-cooking would save so much more time. Have you found that the cooked/reheated meat does or doesn’t absorb your spices as well? That would be my only concern, although I think you could avoid the bland meat scenario by putting some garlic, salt, pepper and some other “general” seasonings (parsley, minced onion) in there when you cook in the crock pot. I would think these are common enough to most things you do with the finished meat that you wouldn’t endanger the final dinner product.

  5. “This was great! Really enjoyed it – thanks for sharing. I do agree with another commenter who said it was a bit sweet – I will definitely reduce the sugar next time (I used regular granulated sugar).

Can’t wait for leftovers tomorrow! :)”

  6. Great way to mix things up a bit and add some more nutritional bang to a burger. Great idea!

  7. These meatballs are so good. My family loves them…kids included. They’ve become my “go to” turkey meatball recipe. I’ve made them quite a few times and finally decided I should say thank you for a good recipe. Thank you ????
