As I’ve explained many times on this blog, we did baby led weaning with each of my babies, letting them hold solid foods. So, I have so many easy baby led weaning recipes we’ve experimented with!
But some foods, prunes included, aren’t very safe for babies. Prunes are hard to chew and could pose a choking hazard.
But, they are a great source of fiber and iron for babies, and can help with constipation, which can happen with babies – especially when introducing solids!
So, prune puree seemed like the way to go to introduce this nutritious food to babies.

Why You’ll Love Prune Puree
- High in iron – For breastfed babies, especially, the 6-month mark is when the mother’s iron stores begin to drop via breastmilk, so it’s important to introduce iron-rich foods to babies.
- High in fiber – Fiber is great for babies and toddlers’ constipation. But, the fiber needs to be paired with adequate fluid intake – this prune puree for baby is great for constipation because it has both!
- Quick – This prune puree for baby is ready in minutes, and easy for baby to self-feed on a pre-loaded baby spoon.
- Just 3 ingredients – Just prunes and water is all you really need! But I like to add some berries for extra Vitamin C. You can also opt for the optional chia seeds if you have them, but definitely not a must!
- Freeze for later – By freezing in an ice cube tray, you can use these in future toddler smoothies!
Ingredients
- prunes
- water – I prefer water, but if you have expressed breastmilk or want to add more nutrients with formula, that also works.
- raspberries
- chia seeds – optional. This bonus ingredient adds so many important nutrients, from fiber to iron, calcium, magnesium and more. Just a 1/2 teaspoon is all you need.
While you can definitely make this prune puree for baby with just iron and prunes, I prefer to add a little bit of Vitamin C to enhance the iron absorption from the prunes.
So, to add Vitamin C, I’ve added raspberries, but you could also do orange slices, mango or strawberries – or even some lemon juice. I think berries add a nice slight touch of sweetness.

How to Make Prune Puree for Baby
There’s really no need for a huge step-by-step process when pureeing prunes because all you really need is a food processor (or high-tech blender).
I even used this mini individual blender for quicker and easier cleaning!
Prep Tip
If you have extra time, soaking the prunes in warm water for 20-30 minutes helps soften them even more, making for quicker and easier blending.

Just mix your prunes (after softening), liquid of choice, chia seeds and berries in a food processor and process until it’s a thin puree!

It’s not the prettiest of colors, but it is so chockfull of nutrition for your little one!
It’s so incredibly easy to puree prunes with water and add-in’s to make a healthy prune puree to serve to baby!

Serving Tip
For younger babies, I recommend making a thinner puree (using more liquid) for easier swallowing. As babies progress with eating and swallowing, you can serve a thicker puree.
Storage
You can store in the fridge for up to 5 days. Or, I like to freeze extra into little ice trays to have prune cubes for smoothies.
Prunes are great for toddlers too, so don’t just limit these pureed prunes to babies – The ice cubes are wonderful additions to smoothies to serve in kids smoothie cups.
