As a mom and Registered Dietitian, I take great care in deciding what to feed my babies and toddlers.

While I truly believe in baby led weaning and letting babies feed themselves with a variety of solid foods, fruit purees and vegetable purees can definitely have their place.

In fact, here’s a post we wrote that covers the breakdown of baby led weaning vs. purees for introducing solids.

It doesn’t have to be one or the other – solids and purees can complement each other!

I enjoy making this baby food recipe at home. You don’t even need a baby food maker.

Other long-time favorites are spinach baby food, cantaloupe puree and parsnip puree for baby.

I also love how we’re introducing just a teeny tiny bit of greek yogurt, which offers protein, calcium, Vitamin D and probiotics!

It’s such a small amount, but it can be a great way to introduce dairy to your baby.

Why The RD Loves this Recipe

As a Registered Dietitian and mom, I love the process of feeding babies and toddlers, trying to introduce nutrition in a fun way. This easy kiwi baby puree is a great way to serve a fruit that can sometimes be sour! We love to serve it in popsicle molds on a hot summer day.

If you have other questions about allergens, here’s some information about how to give baby peanut butter.

Why We Love Kiwi Puree

  • Great way to introduce kiwi to baby – Making a kiwi puree for baby is a simple, straightforward way to introduce this fruit. You can serve it alongside some of these baby breakfast ideas.
  • Full of nutrition – Kiwi is high in fiber, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Pair it with an iron source, like chicken, beef, or beans to better absorb the iron!
  • Ready in minutes – No need to wait hours when making food for baby, this kiwi fruit puree recipe is ready in about 3-5 minutes and easy to serve on ezpz baby suction bowls.
  • Many kiwi puree combinations- Whether you prefer citrus fruits, or other veggies or full-fat additions, there are several options for kiwi puree combinations that you can try. You could even add kiwi to this blueberry puree for baby for extra nutrients. The process is pretty much the same as described below.
  • Easy to freeze – One of my favorite parts about this kiwi baby puree is that it doubles as a fun popsicle, which is easy for baby to hold and suck or lick.

Ingredients

Just a few simple ingredients for this kiwi puree recipe.

  • kiwi – You can use green kiwi, golden kiwi, etc. Golden kiwi is typically sweeter and has more Vitamin C, but you can also stick with a tangy kiwi version and sweeten it naturally or with additions. Ripe kiwi works best!
  • yogurt – Adding plain yogurt is a great way to not only introduce dairy (which is an allergen), but also to add vital nutrition, like protein, calcium and Vitamin D. Use a plain full-fat yogurt if possible.
  • liquid of choice (optional) – For babies under 12, I usually just stick with breastmilk. You can also use formula. For babies older than 12 months, you can opt for whole milk, soy milk, coconut milk, etc.
  • blender or food processor – If you have a high speed blender, that should work fine!

You may also choose to add things like chia seeds, hemp seeds or flax seeds for more nutrition which is fine!

Just note that you may need to add more liquid to account for those additions.

Optional kiwi puree combinations:

  • kiwi + banana
  • kiwi + apple
  • kiwi + cucumber
  • kiwi + carrot
  • kiwi + pear
  • kiwi + baby peanut powder – This would be another way to get more nutrients in and introduce peanut butter to baby! Introducing through purees is a great way to do it.

How to Make Kiwi Baby Puree

If you’ve never made kiwi baby food, it’s incredible easy.

First, wash and peel your kiwi. The outer skin IS edible, but not for babies who haven’t mastered skin yet.

For yourself, go ahead and enjoy the extra fiber and Vitamin C!

Add diced kiwi and yogurt to a blender and blend. You could also replace the yogurt with breastmilk/formula/whole milk or even water.

How to Serve Kiwi Puree to Baby

First and foremost, just serve it in an ezpz baby bowl or suction plate with baby spoons! So nice and easy.

FEEDING TIP: Make sure baby is in a safe, upright position (like this high chair) for feeding.

However, personally, my favorite way to serve kiwi puree is to freeze in ice cube trays or popsicles molds for later.

Baby can practice holding them and bringing them to their mouth.

This is probably good for babies 9 month and older – see more ideas on our baby led weaning for 9 months.

Storage

You can store leftover kiwi puree in the fridge in a tupperware or airtight container, or my favorite kids smoothie cups for a few days!

You can also freeze it in an ice cube tray to later throw in smoothies or defrost, or freeze as popsicles for the future, which is what we love to do with baby popsicle molds.

Expert Tips

  • After testing this recipe several times, I would recommend to use a ripe kiwi (or kiwis) for this recipe. They are easier to blend, and have more natural sweetness.
  • Kiwi puree blends beautifully with other fruits and veggies (like cucumbers, carrots, bananas, pears) and even nut butters, full-fat dairy or tahini for more nutrition.
  • My favorite way to store is to freeze leftover puree in an ice cube tray that I use in smoothies.
