I never thought about putting sweetpotatoes in smoothies until recently. A tropical smoothie with sweetpotato just sounded really refreshing – I can’t tell you where it came from.
Adding sweetpotatoes to smoothies is just really the latest way to embrace their versatility in the kitchen and unique uses for sweetpotatoes.
It’s fun to experiment with different types of smoothies – Since I’m still nursing, breastfeeding smoothies have been a staple for keeping up with my calorie and nutrient needs.
I’ll typically trial different fruits and veggies in smoothies – like spinach, frozen cauliflower, cantaloupe, carrots in a smoothie, etc. So, once I decided to put sweetpotato in smoothies, it was a game-changer.

This sweetpotato smoothie gets its beautiful color from the sweetpotatoes and beets, and a boost of protein from greek yogurt – I especially love greek yogurt smoothies because they are so creamy!
In my smoothies during pregnancy, I’ll typically add greek yogurt over protein powder because I love the creaminess it offers and I want to limit unnecessary ingredients. Same when offering smoothies to toddlers or kids.
But, when I’m busy or falling behind on my breakfast or snacks, I will add protein powder because it increases the protein in this smoothie to a reasonable amount for a meal, or post-workout!
Beets are also a great addition to a smoothie with sweetpotato because the flavors balance each other out nicely – earthy and naturally sweet.
Why You’ll Love This Sweetpotato Smoothie Recipe
There are SO many reasons to love this beautiful smoothie with sweetpotato. It rivals this vibrant cranberry juice smoothie!
- Different levels of sweetness – If you’re sensitive to sweetness in your sweetpotato smoothie, swap plain yogurt for vanilla, and leave out or reduce the maple syrup. Afterall, sweetpotatoes are already sweet on their own!
- Ready in minutes– Just microwave your sweetpotato and scoop out the flesh – your sweetpotato smoothie is ready in minutes!
- High in Vitamins A and C – Hello, immunity boosters! Both sweetpotatoes and mangos are high in Vitamins A and C, which help enhance our immune responses.
- Nutritionally balanced -This sweetpotato smoothie is balanced with protein, fat and carbs, and adding protein powder makes it a great way to get 25 grams of protein at breakfast. Plus, beets and sweetpotatoes in smoothies are both wonderful antioxidant enhancers that can help muscle recovery and endurance.
- Bone-building nutrients – The greek yogurt and milk offer ample protein for athletes and non-athletes alike, as well as Vitamin D and calcium.

I’ve actually tried beets and sweetpotatoes in a smoothie together before – and I loved it! This banana beet smoothie recipe is a little lighter and more refreshing.
This healthy smoothie with sweet potato and beets is heavier and more nutritionally dense and balanced.
Great use for leftover sweetpotatoes
If you find yourself with leftover sweetpotatoes or sweetpotato skin, adding it to a sweetpotato smoothie is a great use to magnify the nutrition and reduce food waste! Win-win!
What You Need
Here are the ingredients to make this healthy pink smoothie.
- sweetpotato – I love using leftover sweetpotato to reduce food waste, but you can also microwave a sweetpotato in 6 minutes and scoop out the flesh to use.
- beets (fresh or canned) – Opting for canned beets can reduce the mess, but if you have leftover cooked beets, this is a great use for them. I would recommend steaming your beets first (if using whole) and letting them cool. Do not put raw beets in your blender, unless they are finely chopped – it may break! I suggest using a Vitamix or food processor, something strong and sturdy.
- frozen mango chunks – Fresh mango will work also!
- greek yogurt – While we’ve used vanilla, you can also use plain to reduce the sugar. For a plant-based or vegan post-workout smoothie, try soy yogurt or coconut yogurt
- milk – For a vegan smoothie, use your favorite plant-based milk (more on the nutrition comparison of different milks).
- maple syrup – Sign up for Thrive Market to have monthly deliveries!
- vanilla extract
- cinnamon
How To Make This Smoothie With Sweetpotato
It’s as simple as it sounds to make a smoothie – just blend all of the ingredients in a blender.
Hot Recipe Tip
One of the best ways to cook your sweetpotato faster is in the microwave. Microwave for 5-7 minutes, or until soft inside. Then, separate flesh from the skin so it cools faster and add it to the blender with the other ingredients.
While it won’t taste like it, know that you’re getting a good dose of vegetables in there – hooray for plant power!
Add more water or liquid for a less thick version, and less liquid or more ice for a thicker smoothie.

This is one of my secrets to get toddlers to eat veggies. By putting sweetpotato in a smoothie, you’re adding natural sweetness, so you could reduce the added sweeteners.
Storage
If you don’t happen to finish your sweetpotato smoothie in one go, you can store the rest in the fridge for later or tomorrow.

One thing I love to do is separate the ingredients to pre-make a smoothie.
Just let the cooked sweetpotatoes and beets cool and place them in ziplock bag, freezer bag or container with the frozen mango, greek yogurt, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and cinnamon.
Keep the bag in the fridge and when you’re ready to enjoy your smoothie, just add milk and blend!
