When youโ€™re starting solids for baby, thereโ€™s usually the discussion of doing baby led weaning vs. purees when starting to feed them.

And while thereโ€™s no right or wrong way for your family, homemade baby food recipes, like blueberry baby food, can either be a puree to feed baby, or a way for baby to self-feed.

If self-feeding, you just pre-load it onto a baby spoon.

As a dietitian and mom of three, Iโ€™m no stranger to baby led weaning recipes. And I love watching babies hold their own food.

But Iโ€™ve also done many baby puree recipes too, since they are thin and easy to swallow, and the texture can be modified depending on the skill level of the baby.

Iโ€™ll simply pre-load the spoon for baby and add the blueberry baby food, which I mix with my breastmilk for extra nutrients.

When Can Babies Have Blueberries?

You can introduce blueberries or blueberry puree baby food early on in your solids journey!

However, when serving blueberries to younger babies (4-6 months of age), I recommend pureeing/blending them in this banana blueberry baby food recipe.

They wonโ€™t yet have the pincer grasp to pick up halved blueberries (and whole blueberries can be a choking hazard).

I share more about introduction tips in my baby led weaning ebook.

Baby-led weaning blueberries recipes can be nutritious and easy, like this blueberry puree for baby.

When babies get to 9 months and older, I like to serve this lemon blueberry overnight oats for a baby breakfast.

I also like that I have more control of the other ingredients when making my own purees, or blended options.

For example, this baby food blueberry recipe has no added fillers or stabilizers, just whole food ingredients for your baby.

Just fresh blueberries (or frozen fruit), your choice of liquid and a healthy dose of healthy fats for babyโ€™s brain!

Some other homemade smooth puree favorites are cantaloupe puree, parnip puree for baby and kiwi puree.

You really can make a puree out of any fruits and/or vegetables, and even meats.

Why the Dietitian Mom Loves this Recipe

โ€œI love introducing new flavors to babies and this homemade blueberry baby food is quick, easy and very nutritious! Itโ€™s easy to modify to add other ingredients, and easy to freeze for later โ€“ any parentโ€™s dream!โ€

Why We Love Blueberry Baby Food

  • Great flavorโ€“ While the banana adds a subtle sweetness, this banana blueberry baby food isnโ€™t overly sweet or tart โ€“ itโ€™s perfect with a smooth texture for your young eater! Plus, the flax seeds add a nice thickening texture, that can be thickened more with experienced eaters.
  • Healthy fats โ€“ This blueberry baby food recipe is unique in that Iโ€™ve added flax seeds for some healthy fats for your babyโ€™s growing brain! It also helps with stabilizing blood sugar, since itโ€™s not just a pure fruit puree.
  • Nutritious โ€“ Blueberries are one of the most popular foods I recommend to clients and for good reason! They are high in antioxidants, Vitamin C, Vitamin K1, and several micronutrients that are great for your immune system.
  • Ready in minutes โ€“ All you need is a high speed blender, some liquid or breast milk and ingredients and youโ€™re ready to go!
  • Saves money โ€“ No need to buy tons of jars of baby food at the store! This blueberry banana baby food recipe just needs a few simple ingredients at home!
  • Any time of day โ€“ Serve this with a hard boiled egg for a baby breakfast idea, or pair it with a sandwich or some lentils as one of the easiest 12 month old lunch ideas.

DID YOU KNOW?

I love making this blueberry baby food a portable snack! Itโ€™s great for on-the-go with older babies and toddlers โ€“ Just add it to your DIY yogurt pouch!

Ingredients

Hereโ€™s what youโ€™ll need to make easy blueberry baby food.

  • blueberries โ€“ I have used both fresh and frozen blueberries successfully in this recipe. I love frozen blueberries because they create more consistency and last longer, and I can buy them in bulk at costco. If you are more comfortable using organic blueberries and you can find them in your grocery store, that is fine, but conventional also work and there is minimal difference, if any, in nutrition.
  • banana โ€“ I used half of a fresh banana, but you can also use frozen banana to give it a little thicker texture. Youโ€™ll want a ripe banana (that is easy to mash) because it lends more natural sweetness.
  • milk โ€“ You can use breastmilk, whole milk, formula or water. Itโ€™s a great use for pumped milk or even frozen breastmilk if you donโ€™t want to make breastmilk popsicles.
  • flax seeds โ€“ While these are optional, I love adding flax seeds to baby recipes for extra healthy fats! I always have flax seeds in my auto monthly delivery from Thrive Market.

You could also add things like coconut oil for more fat, or even a little bit of nut butter when introducing peanut butter to baby or other nut allergens.

You can then serve as is, mix into oatmeal or blueberry oatmeal, mix into yogurt parfaits for your young eater, or even freeze for later in a freezer bag or ice cube tray.

If freezing into ice cubes, just thaw it back into puree form before serving to baby.

You can also blend them up in smoothies, which I like to do for my big kids. Or, dare I say make a blueberry margarita for yourself?!

The blueberry skin pieces in the puree is fine to eat and offers additional fiber. However, you can blend it further or use a food processor to remove or completely blend the skin. You can even strain it further if you choose.

If you choose to add in any additional ingredients (yogurt, chia seeds, other fruits, etc.), you can also add those in after blending, and then blend again.

Other Blueberry Puree Combinations for Baby

The world is your oyster when it comes to blueberry puree combinations โ€“ a versatile baby recipe to serve in so many delicious ways!

You can combine fruits, veggies, nut butters and even some other options in these fun combination purees.

  • blueberry + peach
  • blueberry + avocado
  • blueberry + oats + chia seeds
  • blueberry + strawberry + yogurt
  • blueberry + kiwi
  • blueberries + white beans
  • blueberry + carrot
  • blueberry + baby peanut powder
  • blueberry + celery + mint
  • blueberry + mashed sweetpotato
  • blueberry + 1 tsp coconut oil + water

Expert Tips

  • This blueberry baby food recipe is good as soon as baby is cleared to start solids, between 4-6 months! Iโ€™ll continue to serve it at 7 months to 8 months and up with additions.
  • For younger, less experienced babies, use more liquid to keep your blueberry puree thinner, which creates less of a risk of choking. However, I always recommend having a cpr class under your belt before starting solids.
  • You can also choose to thicken it up to make a chunky puree with less liquid, more flax seeds, oats or even full-fat greek yogurt. This type of puree is better for older babies, 9 months and up.

How to Store Blueberry Puree

You can store it in a tight jar or airtight container/tupperware in the fridge for up to three days.

You can also freeze it for later. I like to freeze it in popsicle molds or an ice cube tray so I can just blend up a few ice cubes for a new blueberry baby food meal option.

If youโ€™ve chosen to freeze your leftover baby blueberry puree in an ice cube tray, you can then use it to make more blueberry puree in the future! Just mix it with a bit of water or liquid again.

You can also defrost the ice cubes in the refrigerator overnight or in the microwave (do short intervals, such as 10 seconds), to make sure it melts slowly and doesnโ€™t get too hot to serve to baby.
