Good morning!
I hope you had a nice weekend! It’s starting to get cooler here in Charlotte, with morning’s in the 40’s. I like it. I’m loving fall, after the hot summer we had!
We had quite the eventful week and weekend. If you follow along on Instagram or snap chat (username: thehurdbird), you may have seen that our family grew by one last week. Meet Tater (named after one of my favorite foods), our sweet new golden doodle!!
She is so fun, playful and cuddly and I just can not get enough of her. Let me tell ya – if you have a rough day, week or month, just have a puppy to come home to and all is right in the world. I don’t want to overload the blog (just yet) with pictures of Tater, but here she is!
We even took her to the Charlotte 49er tailgate this weekend and she was a social butterfly!
I’ll spare you the rest of cuteness overload for now. Let’s talk food and kitchen stuff, which is more likely why you’re here anyway.
As a Registered Dietitian, I often get asked if I like to cook and what types of things I cook most often. While I obviously like to cook, I also like foods I can cook quickly (see tips for quick dinners). I’m all about making recipes easier, quicker, as well as utilizing convenience, so I wanted to share with you some of my favorite kitchen equipment that I love and use pretty frequently.
I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, whether it be meal prepping, brain storming, cooking, baking, or cleaning up. If I’m home, 80% of the time, I’m in the dining room or kitchen.
As I’ve evolved in the kitchen, I’ve become much more well versed in utilizing different kitchen appliances, but often stick to the simple things. Here’s a little glimpse into things I use almost daily (definitely weekly).
My Top Kitchen Products:
Ninja
I use my ninja daily, whether it be for smoothies, pureeing things, frozen yogurt after dinner or even use it to blend flours and ingredients in baking. When it comes to the heavier stuff, like these trail mix bites, homemade hummus and homemade peanut butter, I prefer my Kitchen Aid food processor.
Espresso Machine
This Keurig Rivo/Cappucino maker was a wedding present but boy do we love it. I’m a coffeeholic and there’s no way I’d survive without my coffee in the morning. When we have the extra time in the morning, Ed will brew some french press coffee, but I’m usually consistent with starting my personal cup first thing. And when I want my beloved espresso, I pop a pod into the Rivo and froth up a cup of milk!
Salad Spinner
This OXO Salad Spinner has recently become one of my favorites. While I never thought I’d ever need a salad spinner, after getting one for our wedding I’ve come to learn that I needed this more than I thought.
Especially with all of the local produce that we buy, it really helps to wash the greens and use this to help them dry quicker. And there’s really no effort needed on your part! You just press a button and watch them spin.
Slow Cooker
Oh my gosh, you guys. The fact that I didn’t start using this sooner in my life is a total fail on my part. I have the 3-in-1 Multicooker and I love it, especially this time of year. You guys, when I say things are life savers, this is the ULTIMATE life saver.
I mean, how can you deny the ease and convenience of just throwing RAW food in this contraption, and coming home from work at the end of the day to a delicious, personalized meal, with any flavors you want it to take on?
Whoever thought of this was a pure genius. Thanks for creating a portable, quick mini stove option that allows me to cook and not burn the house down while I’m not there. Time is money and I’ve really learned to utilize our slow cooker to my advantage.
I can’t use the excuse “I don’t have time to workout after work, I have to cook,” because this slow cooker is doing it all for me.
Apple Corer
I’m one of those gals that eats an apple a day, anytime of year. I really love just crunching into a juicy apple, but when I pack them for snacks to dip in peanut butter or hummus, I prefer apple slices, and this thing makes it so easy.
Spiralizer
I am so obsessed with my $10 zoodler. This is one of my favorite handheld kitchen tools and can really turn the boring veggie into something great. Zucchini noodles, carrot noodles, sweet potato noodles, there’s just so many options. Great for getting kids to try new foods, too! They are a staple here, especially with my favorite salmon patties!
Honorable mentions:
I love love my waffle maker. I don’t use it on a regular basis, but I love those slow weekend mornings when there’s time to make waffles! And it folds up = best ever!
And my donut pan! It’s fun when I do make donuts!
Those are some of my favorite tools in the kitchen that help make my life easier, and my food more fun. I’d love to hear what you love in the comments below!

That’s such a great way to get the children involved! Aww what kind of dog is Cotton?
wow Tarte is so adorable <3
For me in the kitchen everything is important and I don't know which one is most. But i love my oven, because i love baking a lot.
Have a great week !
Hi there, thanks for your sharing.
I love you so much because you and me have the same love of cooking and always care about dining room and kitchen. Me too, 100%. 🙂
I am totally okay with you overloading your blog with pictures of Tater, seriously!!!!!! Apple corer’s are actually super useful, theres no way i ever want to cut apples but that device makes it almost fun haha!
SHE IS ADORABLE!!!! SO cute. Congrats! Prepare to be obsessed….
I couldn’t live without my spiralizer. I honestly don’t know what I would do without it!
Tater is so cute! I want a dog so bad!
Thank you!
I love my spiralizer too! I got it for 10 bucks off Amazon too! I don’t know how I lived without it and zucchini noodles!
We missed out for so many years!
Tater is SO cute (and looks super dooper cuddly!) and I love the name 😛
My most used piece of kitchen equipment is probably baking pans! Or my food processor.
She is SOOO CUDDLY! What would bloggers be without baking pans?!
Tanner is SO CUTE!!!! Oh my gosh, I love him! My top kitchen tool in college is my big baking sheet since I can use it to roast just about everything. Super great for easy meals!
So true. Easy clean up to just have one sheet, too!!
AHHHHHH what a cute puppy – congrats on the new addition!!! Getting a dog (and then a second one) was one of the best decisions my husband and I ever made.
Food processor, crockpot, immersion blender, and stand mixer are all key items for me! I love my French press as well since it’s so easy to make a cup or two of coffee or tea.
Thank you!! We’re so excited but I’m realizing I will not get any work done at home, haha. I have an immersion blender but I actually haven’t used it. I need to get on that!
CUTENESS. So fluffy! So I really really love doggies, and it’s warms me right to the core to see one of God’s amazing creatures added to your family. 🙂
And I’m nodding my head at all these kitchen accessories. I love our food processor for nut butter, but I love our Vitamix for smoothies and purees and such. The only one I don’t have is a spiralizer, but maybe I’ll ask for Christmas?
We are so happy to add her to our family! Yes, ask for one for Christmas! Spiralizers are food bloggers best friends!
I need to get a spiralizer! I love my apple cutter, ninja, and keurig. Those are a lifesaver for me!
They are such necessary tools, aren’t they?!
OMG that puppy is so cute!!!! Congrats on the strong marathon finish- just read the recap before this post!
Thanks, Jess!
Okay ‘Tater’ is officially the best pet name I’ve heard. Genius!! My parents got a golden doodle – she’s just over a year now – and I definitely say they are the most affectionate dogs. They absolutely thrive off human connection and will make you feel so incredibly loved. Ours has a few… er… interesting quirks….as I’m sure yours will as well. But you’ll love her for them anyways. Quite the energizer bunny at times too. Have so much fun!!
Oh right the food – one more thing. I’m wanting to get my mom/sister in law etc a spiralizer for xmas. I didn’t have luck with the handheld one I got, but it was quite different than yours. Does this one do sweet potato noodles as well – have you tried?
I have done it with sweet potato noodles! I do it, then cook the noodles after. They were good!
Congrats on the puppy—what a cutie!! My favorite kitchen gadgets are my keurig machine, food processor, knife set, and slow cooker!
Thanks, Heather!
By far, my coffee pot gets the most usage. Cheese grater close second. I want an espresso maker so I can have my own lattes at home. It would be well worth the $$ investment and save me from buying lattes out.
What would we be without coffee makers?! It’s definitely worth the investment to me on the backend, rather than paying a few dollars every time I want a latte!
I don’t have a crock pot, but my old roommate had one and I would use it all the time! I miss using it for all sorts of meals. I love my Toddy for cold brew coffee, Vitamix, and spiralizer.
I just looked up what a Toddy is and it sounds amazing!
I have a basic keurig that I use every day- I don’t know how ever lived without it! And I definitely need a new crock pot. I would love one that has a timer so it will stop cooking and just keep the food warm if we aren’t ready to eat when it’s done. These all look like great products! Congrats on the new puppy!
We have a basic keurig too. We don’t function without coffee in our house, ha!
OMG Tater is precious! I swear the Doodles are SOOOOO cute! I can’t tell you how many apple corers I have broken. Not sure if it’s just me or what. Ha! I think I’m the only blogger in the universe who does not yet have a zoodler.
I’ve been wanting a doodle for so long! They are so friendly and just love people. I see a zoodler in your future! 🙂
I definitely use my Vitamix, my hand grater and my baking trays the most!
You’re right – I couldn’t survive without baking trays!
