Have you ever been in the mood for a coffee protein shake recipe? Like you wake up, and you just want your coffee, but may not have an appetite, but you know you need nutrients?
Well, THIS protein coffee recipe is for you.
I love it for summer mornings. It’s nice knowing that a coffee and protein shake together can be filling, satiating, satisfying AND give me the caffeine I need with three small kiddos running around.
If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know I love my coffee. Plus, coffee before running can be advantageous for performance!
Ingredients For Banana Peanut Butter Coffee Smoothie

I’m from Rhode Island. Rhode Island, and the Northeast in general, is Dunkin’ Donuts mecca. We drink iced coffees all year round (yes, even in the winter).
People think I’m pretty crazy when I order an iced coffee in the winter. I’ll have an occasional hot coffee then. But, in the summer, all I crave is iced coffee.
And with this banana peanut butter coffee smoothie, I quench my iced coffee needs, while also hydrating with other nutritious ingredients, too!
…Think peanut butter, chocolate, banana and coffee all in one.
I love thick shakes. Some other favorites are orange mango smoothie, mint chocolate black bean smoothie and Strawberry banana smoothie bowl.
Can You Put Coffee In A Smoothie?
Of course you can! There’s coffee milk, coffee ice cream, so why not a coffee flavored smoothie?
This is my favorite method for adding coffee to a smoothie because there are other flavors mixed in, too.
Coffee Banana Peanut Butter Smoothie Ingredients
For the best coffee and peanut butter smoothie, make sure you have:
- choice of coffee – brewed, iced, espresso or cold brew – Cold brew smoothies may be bold, so adjust the other ingredients accordingly!
- banana – Riper bananas may result in a bit sweeter banana peanut butter coffee smoothie, which I enjoy!
- greek yogurt – You definitely don’t have to add yogurt to your peanut butter banana coffee smoothie, but I love the addition of protein (26 grams total in this recipe). Greek yogurt smoothies are also creamier, and full of probiotics, calcium, potassium and more. Instead of yogurt, you could add nut butter, avocado or more ice.
- milk – I used dairy milk, but use your milk of choice! Note that many plant milks lack the protein (check out this milk comparison chart for more info).
- peanut butter
- peanut butter powder
- cocoa powder
- vanilla
- oats

Other modification ideas:
- Want more of a chocolate flavor? You can add more cocoa powder to make it taste like more of a chocolate coffee smoothie. Chocolate protein powder in place of the peanut butter powder would also help add more chocolate flavor!
- If you prefer almond butter, make an almond butter coffee smoothie!
- If you’re someone who loves toppings on your coffee banana smoothie like I do, I suggest trying chia seeds, hemp seeds, granola, fruit, or even an extra dollop of peanut butter! My favorite granola choices are this pumpkin seed granola or coconut cinnamon maple granola!
This coffee smoothie also makes a great lunch for runners post run since it’s high in carbohydrates and protein. After a run, protein helps with the recovery process! With nutrient timing, we want to plan protein after the run, rather than before.
How To Make The Best Peanut Butter Coffee Smoothie
Making this protein coffee recipe is as easy as can be, and is a good snack for athletes after a workout!
First, let your coffee cool. Then, mix the ingredients together in a high speed blender.

I think it’s pretty genius to make a protein drink with coffee. Better yet, serve it as a cold coffee smoothie recipe. This coffee banana peanut butter smoothie recipe is also great after a morning workout!
If serving to kids, obviously omit the coffee – sometimes I’ll just double the recipe and pour theirs first, adding the coffee last.
QUICK TIP
This coffee banana peanut butter smoothie is a bit on the bolder side, so if you like your coffee sweeter, you could use the whole banana, add more sweetener, more peanut butter, more milk or even substitute the milk for creamer.
Just know that this peanut butter and coffee smoothie can be customized in so many ways. Sometimes, I’ll add protein powder or collagen to up the protein content.
It was my go to post run drink when running and breastfeeding.

Peanut butter and coffee are two of my favorite things. Why have I never thought to put them together?!
I think I could swap my afternoon americano for this guy…
You won’t regret it!
I packed my Keurig because we are moving and I’ve only been drinking iced coffee, now I wish I wouldn’t have packed it!
I’m glad you at least have iced coffee – I don’t think I could survive moving without it!
Oh wow. peanut butter in a coffee drink sounds really good. We don’t have Publix here, but if I’m ever over there and I have an opportunity to go I should go. It sounds like a wonderful experience.
It is the least stressful grocery shopping experience you can have. Very pleasant!
I live in Massachussetts (one mile from Heartbreak Hill!). What is this Publix you refer to? 🙂 Just kidding I have seen them when travelling down south. What powdered peanut butter do you use?
I’m a new reader and have caught up on some of your earlier posts. Great blog! I look forward to reading and learning more.
massachusetts one S. 🙂
I know – I grew up in RI and we did not have Publix!! Such a shame. I use PB2 for powdered peanut butter – they also have a delicious chocolate flavored one – my favorite! Thanks for commenting, Amanda 🙂
WOW! This is all of my favorite things in one smoothie! I did not know you were from the Northeast too 🙂 I hope to one day live down south myself–I’m pretty done with these stupid winters! Anyway–this looks delicious! I love iced coffee in the summer and make my own but also enjoy treating myself every now and again from a coffee shop!
Yes, from Rhode Island! Yes, come down to the Carolina’s – very mild winters 🙂
